"Thinner film" sounds like a compromise — less material must mean less protection, right? Not necessarily. Gauge (measured in microns) is one of the most misunderstood specs in stretch film buying, and getting it right is often where the real cost savings live, without weakening a single load.
What Gauge Actually Measures
Gauge, or micron thickness, is simply how thick the film is. WPS stretch film runs from 8 to 30 microns, covering everything from light bundling to heavy, irregular pallets. But thickness alone doesn't tell you how well a film will perform — that depends on how the film is engineered and how it's applied.
What "Downgauging" Actually Means
Downgauging is the industry trend toward using thinner film engineered with higher elongation and tenacity, so it delivers the same or greater containment force as a heavier, older-generation film. It's not about wrapping loads less securely — it's about modern cast-film technology doing more with less material.

When Not to Downgauge
- Sharp, uneven, or high-risk loads (metal edges, exposed banding) where puncture resistance matters more than material savings
- Hand-wrapped operations without consistent tension control, where a lighter gauge has less margin for inconsistent application
- Long-haul or multi-handling transit where the load gets more opportunities to shift
